Printing in a Multi-Substrate World

Printing in a Multi-Substrate World

15 May 2019

In the Golden Years of traditional printing, everything was rather simple: it was usually offset for paper, screen printing for textiles, and specialized techniques for other materials. Now everything is changing: digital printing has opened possibilities which range from printing single pieces online on-demand, to having a company’s logo printed on any conceivable substrate. There is, of course, a strong request for coherence: a brochure should possibly look identical to a t-shirt or a plastic bag. This is feasible, in principle, with some exceptions: yet designers often struggle, trying to figure out “what will it look like”, and also “what will it NOT look like”. The riddle can be solved by accurate preview of the final result, which can be achieved with nearly any software and an accurate monitor. And, of course, a basic grasp of the black science known as colour management.
